Project Overview
Memento, a social platform concepted by Darren Boey and Julian de Jonquieres, for users to write and share their memoirs.
Recognizing that everyone has a unique life story, they aimed to provide a platform for recording and sharing valuable life wisdom with future generations.
I contributed to this project by designing the platform from scratch, including information architecture, user flow, user interface and prototype. I also conducted usability testing to ensure a seamless experience for out target users.
How might we empower seniors to easily and confidently share their life stories through a user-friendly memoir writing experience that prioritizes privacy?
CHALLENGES
Many people write their life stories in Word files, but managing numerous documents is difficult and can lead to lost work. To better organize and digitalise their memories (photos, etc.), they want a single, easy-to-use solution to store and connect their stories with their mementos.
KEY DESIGN ACHIEVEMENTS
I transformed complex business concepts into an intuitive memoir writing experience by focusing on user needs and designing an efficient workflow. This led to a streamlined interface and clear information architecture.
By conducting six in-depth user interviews & usability testing, I identified key usability issues. This iterative process enhanced the user experience and set the stage for future improvements.
OUTCOME & IMPACT
The user-centred design process, guided by user interviews, greatly improved user satisfaction and efficiency.
Addressing critical usability issues, we developed a more intuitive and enjoyable experience, which resulted in quicker task completion.
Based on user research data, this strengthened foundation supports future development and enables rapid iteration based on continuous user feedback.
Design Ideation
Working with the product owner, I collaboratively designed the "Memento" memoir app.
This involved sketching user flows, defining the information architecture, and crafting guiding prompts and dialogue examples.
Handwritten notes alongside formal diagrams illustrate the iterative design process, prioritsing an intuitive and engaging user experience.

Key Findings from Initial Usability Testing and User Interviews
After creating wireframes from our handwritten drafts, we conducted usability testing with six couples (age 55+) who regularly write memoirs. Key feedback included:
🎛️
"Can I skip the guidance?
I just want to start right away."
Some participants are not familiar with writing memoirs and prefer more step-by-step guidance.
On the other hand, some are experts or confident writers who already have ideas and find the guidance disruptive.
We need to find an alternative to cater to both groups.
🗺️
"I'm not sure where to start with, what should I do now?"
Participants perceive some design elements differently across generations, finding certain icons used for buttons and menus confusing.
They prefer verbal guidance to understand what to do next.
Without clear instructions, they feel lost and hesitant to explore.
🔐
"How will this platform protect my personal stories?"
Memoirs often contain very personal experiences, and participants prefer to share their stories only with close friends and family.
They have privacy concerns about sharing personal stories on our platform.
